Well, my first post on the situation regarding couples seeking a 'legalised' Celebrant weddings is still dragging its feet, much like a reluctant groom at the altar.
Despite the Law Commission's recommendations in July 2022, we're still stuck in the same spot. I get it, politicians have other 'urgent matters' to tackle, like the cost of living crisis. But hey, one might argue that shaking up marriage laws as recommended could actually HELP couples and families who are pinching pennies but still want to tie the knot.
Changing the law would open the floodgates of opportunity with more venue options, on a day of their choosing—maybe when prices are more wallet-friendly. This could slash the wedding costs that many couples currently find scarier than a bridezilla. Plus, venues could cash in on this new trend of ditching traditional Saturday weddings. From my experience, couples I chat with are definitely game for mid-week nuptials just to save a buck.
The national election in July 2024 was like a carrot dangled in front of us, a chance for Labour to pop the question about reform in their manifesto. But alas, it was a no-show, and the conservative party played hard to get too!
Enter the Liberal Party... the only party that even gave a nod to the reform, let alone slipped a promise into their manifesto like a love note in a lunchbox. Check out their Rights and Equality Chapter:
We will expand the rights of couples by:
– Introducing legal recognition of humanist marriages.
– Implementing the Law Commission’s proposals to reform wedding laws, giving couples more choice over how and where their wedding takes place, while respecting religious beliefs and practices. https://www.libdems.org.uk/manifesto
Being the eternal optimist I am, I see this as a step in the right direction.
Hear me out!!...
Westminster is starting to perk up its ears. I'm not a political junkie, but I might just contact my local liberal MP to rally some support. As the third-largest party in the country and with 70 seats in the House of Commons, it's tempting to grab the bull by the horns and see if we can get this question on the Parliament dance floor!
Today, I'm proudly displaying the Wedding Law reform logo on my website and my social media.
Do you feel the same way—that people deserve to call the shots and have the wedding they dream of?
I'd urge you to join the cause if you do.

Stay tuned for updates, M xx
